Project Runway Canada: Top Designers

I am most definetly a fan of Project Runway Canada. Former Supermodel Iman, is an entertaining host who understands design. The competion has highlighted some wonderful Canadian talent.

Lucian is a designer who is originally from Romania, but he has settled in Canada. With his exquiste tailoring, he has been my favourite designer throughout the competition. He has been critiqued for too much embellishment, but he has a distinctive style that you either love or hate. I personally love it. He is a perfectionist, whose work is always feminine and haute couture.

Shernett Swaby is a successful designer who has her own line and store "Swaby". She is the most focused designer on the show She is extremely determined to win, and I think she could pose a serious threath to Lucian. Her casual outfits are always wearable and stylish. However, her eveningwear tends to be too theatrical and not very flattering.

Despite Megan's sloppy tailoring and unimaginative design she has continued to be passed through each stage of the competion at the expense of talented designers. On the 6th episode, Carlie was let go for poor execution of her design. This was very disappointing. I had picked Carlie to be one of the top three.

In place of Carlie, my next choice is Bidell. He has a street style, which reminds me of former Project Runway winner Jeffery Sebelia. He is a very fast worker, who does a lot of creative designs. I would love to own the skinny fit pants with the puff pockets.

Hot Winter Look

It gets boring wearing the same coat, day in and day out through the long winter months. The alternative to buying a new coat is warming up your winter look with expressive accessories. I wouldn't suggest wearing all these accesories at once. Instead buy a couple of scarves, belts and a great brooch and mix and match two pieces at a time.

The best winter accessory this season is the silk scarf. Silk scarves are more colourful and stylish than traditional knit ones. They brigthen up your overall look. If you need the extra warmth of a traditional knit scarf, you can still get a fashionable look, by using classic patterns like hounsdtooth, plaid and animal print or even solid bright colours.

Sale Item of the Week: Chiffon Babydoll Dress

Normally, I don't like to use sale items in my trendsetter and shopping bag posts because there are limited sizes and quantities. However, I've decided to give sale items a section, because everyone loves a bargain, and if you can't get it in your size this time, next time you'll get lucky!

Purple is the colour this season and I will take chiffon over satin any day. I would pair this with opaque black stockings and black platform pumps, or go bare leg with gold dress sandals, gold bracelets and gold chandelier earrings. This dress is a great additon to a party girl's closet.

Fashion 911 Emergency: Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone dared to wear this tacky outfit to The Make a Wish Foundation Gala in Miami on Nov. 10th. Granted, she is in great shape, but no one over the age of 25 should be wearing a lycra catsuit. The fact that she wore this to a fundraising gala, where formal or semi-formal attire is the dress code is more shocking. I can't believe she tried to dress it up with her blinged out watch and cross necklace and she just had to add that gaudy Fendi bag. Maybe she was trying to have fun with the outfit, but we are not amused!

Byblos Spring 2008 RTW

Italian fashion house Byblos' latest collection is up to the Byblos standard. While not as dramatic as their Fall 2007 collection it is equally as impressive. Byblos is luxurious, refined and stylish. The Byblos woman is always well put together. Ornate detailing is the Byblos signature.

The fan like pleating design was the most outstanding feature of the collection. It made the pieces very deliciate and feminine. The strappy sandals are a little touch of sexy. I even like rope belts which completed some outfit.

The jackets were extremely well tailored. They were modern yet sophisticated. The sleeves of some of the shirts were almost otherworldly but still very wearable.

My favourite thing about this look which Ne-yo is wearing is the grey coat. Grey is definetly the colour of the season. I'm not sure how I feel about pairing grey with brown, but overall it is a good look. I find that men's fashions can often be repetitive, so the solution is to pay attention to detail. I choose pants which like Ne-yo's have some plaid detail. For the shoes I went with something daring- a grey purple crocodile embossed dress shoe. It is a subtle shade of purple but it makes the outfit look original without being outrageous.

Halle Berry Style

Halle Berry is definetly the hottness. She looks flawless at the premiere in London of her film Things We Lost in the Fire. I love her simple gold bangles and earrings. She is wearing a gown from the Versace Spring 2008 Ready to Wear Collection. The model is wearing the gown in yellow, the picture doesn't show the strap details, but I don't think it makes a difference. Halle Berry wins this style showdown- no contest!

1940s Style

The 1940s are heavily inspiring fashions this season. The look is very feminine and delicate. Hair is curled or set in loose waves and the key make-up item is red lipstick. I strongly recommend having a make-up artist pick out the right shade of red lipstick for you. Since it is a very bold colour the wrong shade can look harsh, however the right shade looks dramatic and sexy.

Blouses with femine details such as bows and ruffles are pefect for getting the vintage look. They are great when paired with a pencil skirt or high waisted jeans for a more casual look.

I love the shoes for this season. I really like the black and white contrasting. These are very trendy shoes, so perhaps if you wanted to opt for something that will withstand the fashion seasons you could try the classic high heeled pump and still pull of the 1940s look.

When buying a suit, I find that it is best when you can buy the pieces seperately so that you can ensure that both the blazer and the trousers fit you properly. Often times when you buy a pair of trousers, the pockets are sewn shut. I think that if you buy trousers with pockets instead of flat front ones, it is best to leave them sewn shut. I find that after putting your hands in the pockets for a while, they become stretched out and the pockets look very bulky on your hips.

The jacket is the most versatile part of the suit. I love wearing the jacket over a nice tailored dress with some mary janes for a work or afternoon lunch look. Sheath dresses are very conservative yet sexy. Also try experimenting with shorts and pencil skirts.

Cameron Diaz wore this Christian Dior dress to the Mets Costume Institute Gala. She opted to pair the dress with turqouise jewellery. I think that the turquoise was a really good stylish idea, but the earrings were too much. They were too heavy. She should have done the necklace and a turqoise evening bag. I think she looked much better than the model, simply because she didn't wear the matching hat!

Rbk Freestyle

There were some amazing gowns worn to the Costume Insitute Gala this year; these are my top picks in descending order:

In first place, with her gorgeous chiffon gown is Camilla Belle. The gown is just perfectly made, there isn't one thing I would critique about it. It is a unique style with the gold detailing and the layers of grey chiffon. She looks flawless.

My only complaint is with her hair, which looks like she did it herself in the limo five minutes before posing for this picture. I want her to go back to being a redhead, or at least a brunette. This over done orange-blonde isn't working.

Every well-dressed man needs linen in his summer wardrobe. Olive green or royal blue shirts look great with natural coloured linen pants. I recommend tucking the shirt in for this look. I did like the cuff in picture A and it would compliment this look if there were one less item in dark brown leather. Be careful not to over-accessorize.The Chelsea boots are the best item here, This London look is extrememly fashionable right now. I love them because they are an orginal style and an alternative to the lace up dress shoes.

Orignal fashions: T-shirts

Threadless.com is a great website which I recently discovered. They have competitions which allow people to design t-shirts. The winning designs are produced and customers can purchase a unique t-shirt. The t-shirts are $15 for men and $17 for women. Hoodies are also available for $40.

I really love original t-shirts. It is definetly a fashion mistake to wear a logo tee. I will never understand how people are persuaded to buy expensive t-shirts that are plain except for a strategically placed company's logo. These shoppers are getting ripped off AND they are acting as a walking advertisement.

This t-shirt was my favourite. It would be even better if they had printed "Biggie was right..." above the picture. I found that a lot of a humour in the t-shirt designs comes from the title. In some cases, the significance of the picture would not be clear to someone who didn't know the title.

Typical female Vs. male stereotypes; re-enforced with the pink for girls and blue for boys. Love it. This would be a cute shirt for the ladies to wear to a wedding shower.

I was disappointed that Treadless.com didn't have V-neck Ts. I really prefer V-necks but for my favourite designs, I can make do with a crew t-shirt. Wearing a shirt with interesting designs like these instantly makes a plain outfit stylish. Go for style and vogue and skip the logos Ts!

Reverie makes a t-shirt which is very similar to the treadless "Perpetuate the stereotype" shirt, it is called "Guys and Dolls". I'm not sure which company came out with the shirt idea first, but one of them is jacking the other's style!

Black and White is in vogue!

The simplicity of black and white together is making a dramatic statement on red carpets everywhere. Whether it is a black and white dress or black and white seperates that are being paired together, the look is undeniably fresh and sophisticated.

Who do you think wore the Jill Stuart outfit better: Lindsay Lohan or Nia Long? I vote for Nia, she seems to fill out the dress better and I prefer black shoes with this outfit. Lindsay also looks great.

You may not have to buy new pieces to achieve this look since most people have black and white in their closet. If you want an excuse for shopping though, there are some great options below. I love Scarlett Johansonn, I love her movies, her attidue and normally, I love her style. This time however, she gets the thumbs down! I can't believe it, everything is so off center! Somehow, she still manages to look beautiful in spite of this fashion disaster. Her hair looks overprocessed, like it has been straightened too much and has no body left to it. The colouring of the dress and the pleating of the skirt is very unflattering. Yuck! Sorry Scarlett, try again!

SJP is the latest celebrity to hop on the "design your own fashion line" bandwagon, except she is doing it with a twist. Her line is called Bitten- taken from the fact that she was 'bitten' by the acting bug. The line is meant to be affordable and it actually is! Every piece is $20 or under- hard to believe; yet true.

I haven't seen any pieces except for the polka dot black and white dress pictured, and I would definetly buy that for $20. I have a similar dress except mine has spaghetti staps and I would recommend this dress. It is a classic and a staple for your closet. You can wear it to the office with a white or black sweater or in the evening with red heels and a red belt. The line will be sold by Steve and Barry's and debuts on June 7th.

I have noticed that sometimes when it comes to fashion, the rich try to look poor and the poor try to look rich. Certain celebrities like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen shell out thousands of dollars for that 'urban' look - boho chic. People with average income who want the designer touch, sometimes break the bank for those Gucci shades or have to turn to imitation brands for the latest vogue in purses or shoes.

Madonna Style

Madonna debuted her M collection for H&M on March 22nd. The pieces were inspired by clothes from Madonna's closet. Apparently there wasn't a mad rush for the clothes like there was with Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCarthney. I can see why.

Madonna is of course the woman who said she doesn't care too much about fashion; she just wanders around in her track suit and embarasses her daughter Lourdes when she picks her up from school dressed that way. Maybe they should have gotten Lourdes to design the collection; which is nothing special.

The collection consists of black and white pieces that don't have any thing that would make them seem destinct or designer, which you would expect, considering that the pieces are more expensive typical than H&M. Whether or not designers should use fur in their clothing continues to be a debate within the fashion industry. Inspite of the controversy fur is still fashionable. Most people are already familiar with the issue and the views of both the pro and anti-fur supporters. The main argument against fur is that it is promoting cruelty and the murder of helpless animals, which is uneccessary when there are many other materials available to designers. While on the pro fur side, fur is just another material like leather which comes from animals and it is only natural for humans to use animals for food and clothing.

The ironic thing about fur coats is that they are worn the wrong way! Native Peoples wore the fur on the inside, because that traps the air keeping the wearer warmer. My view is that we should never push our ethics on other people, it isn't very effective. You can present people with the facts and allow them to make their own choice. For me, PETA has lost a lot of legitmacy even with celebrities such as Pamela Anderson supporting them. Crashing fashion shows naked, running around confonting celebrities and throwing paint on fur clothing does not seem very rational to me. It does not ever convince people not to wear fur, it just makes them more resistant to the anti-fur activists because they seem like a wild band of lunatics.

People are going to hate me for saying this, but I'm really not a huge Marc Jacobs fan. He does design wonderful purses, but when it comes to clothing, nothing he makes seems very flattering. I have to wonder if it weren't Marc Jacobs, with his popularity with the stars and it was some other unknown designer- would people really get so excited about his clothes?

The problem with his collection, in my non-designer opinion, is that it isn't very interesting. It is not something that I would look up and say "Oh I have to have that!" It is just typical Marc Jacobs. I think I would even prefer his grunge period, because at least that was different. Above is the what I thought was the best look of the collection- minus the hat.

So, the tagline for his show was "Girl with a monogrammed handbag" however I'm thinking it should have been "Girl with a floppy hat" There were flopply beret style hats on nearly every model! Why? Not a good look! The few monogrammed handbags were quite nice though.

Here's a close up of one I wouldn't mind owning!

Makeover-O-Matic

These are the hair styles that are really fashionable right now. Loose long curls like Beyonce, short pixie cuts like Kiera Knightly's and the inverted bob that Victoria Beckham had. The inverted bob is my favourite look and I am planning on having my hair cut like that.

A) A lot of celebrities are wearing their hair this way. It looks good on a lot of people and long hair gives you a lot of options- especially when it is a lace front weave like Beyonce's.

B) The pixie cut is for the brave woman. That is really a lot of hair to cut off. I think you have to have a really nice, small and feminine face to pull this off, because you don't want to look masculine.

C) The inverted bob is the new take on the classic bob which had a rounder shape. Having it longer at the front like this makes it look more edgy. It is a short hair cut, but not so short that you would never be able to do anything different with it, such as curling it.

So, although you may feel like one of these styles would look good, you may not want to risk cutting your hair and ending up with a disaster. Luckily, you can go to http://makeover.ivillage.com and test out any of these and many other styles risk free by uploading your photo. I tried it, and although I couldn't find the exact styles that I wanted I found some similar ones, that gave me a better idea of how they would look on me. I was disappointed I couldn't find the inverted bob, but I will still get that cut. There are other features you can test out with the makeover-o-matic program such as eye colour, glasses and makeup. This is a very basic casual look, that would be suited to just about any man. The accessories are really essential in this look. Most guys probably have a white shirt and washed blue jeans in their closets, so just by adding the accessories the look can be created. I chose these black shoes because really I'm tired of the white kicks with jeans look. Black runners can be worn casually, but can also be pulled of with semi-casual unlike white ones. The scarf is cashmere and it is on sale. I would really suggest that anyone who likes it get it, you are not likely to find this great deal again!

Hermes Fall 2007 RTW

Well, like most collections this season the Hermes show was composed of neutrals and earth tones with hints of colour. Accessories were almost as important as the clothes themselves, with nearly every model outfitted in hats and gloves.

Leather, leather everywhere! This is quite nice actually, I love the warm brown colour and the pleating at the end of the skirt. Although everyting is the same colour, it still looks interesting becasuse of the differnt textures-the satin blouse, camel coat and leather skirt.

The equestrain look. Neutral fibres which are highlighted with the leather vest and riding boots. Here's an idea; matching your gloves with your jacket colour instead of the boots- I think this looks much better. Otherwise you look overly coordinated with all your accessories in the same colour.

I really love this muff, it is made to look like a purse.... I wonder if you can put anything in it?

Of course, no collection would be complete without the seasons singature hint of colour and dark stockings. This is the ever popular navy blue in suede.

Here is Christina Ricci at the premiere of her new movie Black Snake Moan. This isn't the worst fashion disaster I have seen, but I chose it because she was so close to looking great, but still so far away. A little more effort could have made such a difference. From the neck up she looks amazing, but as I lower my eyes I am very disappointed.

The problem with this dress is it has absolutely no shape. Really she has a great figure, but this dress is doing its best to hide that. I'm really confused about why the designer added that cheap looking black band to the top part.

I don't think clothing has to be skin tight, but it does need some form. The designer should have added some darts somewhere. Look at how it just hangs of her back! There is enough room in this dress for another person. This dress looks like something that was bought at the discount store for your high school prom. Try again Christina!

Giambattista Valli Fall 2007 RTW

Giambattista Valli showed today in Paris for fashion week. This is the designer who created the dress Victoria Beckham wore to the TomKat wedding. Well, I loved this collection. It was really subdued- clean lines a lot of black and neutrals with hints of red and yellow.

I couldn't believe the shoes! I love them. They are 6 inch heels- impressive! Normally I'm not a fan of open-toed shoes with stockings, but coming down the runway they looked amazing. I'm not sure how well that would translate on the street though.

So is this the new vogue? Open-toed brightly coloured shoes with dark stockings?

Celebrity Brands

Well the fashion industry has complained that supermodels are a close to extinct breed, who are being wiped out by the celebrity. However, maybe what the fashion industry should concern itself with is how Celebrity Brands are begining to take over from the Designer Labels. It is almost becoming expected that any celebrity with a significant amount of fame and with a modicum of style or at least a good stylist must start their own brand. Not for profits, but for the sake of fashion of course! Yeah right! Well here are what I consider to be some notable Celebrity Brands:

1. P.diddy: Sean John

2. Gwen Stefani: L.A.M.B.

3. Jennifer Lopez: Sweetface

4. Beyonce: House of Dereon

5. Victoria Beckham: Victoria Beckham of Rock&Republic, dVb Style

6. Jessica Simpson: Jessica Simpson

Of course these aren't the only celebrity brands, but they are the only ones I consider to be stylish and would ever consider wearing. P.diddy's Sean John line is quite impressive for men; really well tailored clothing along with casual wear. Unlike some other "rappers" such a Pharell, whose Billionaire's Boys Club clothing brings tacky patterns to a whole other level. Gwen Stefani brings her crazy style to the masses with L.A.M.B. popularizing the harujuku look in North America. Maybe the best thing about JLo's Sweetface line is the accessories, although there have been quite a few pieces off the runway that I love.

Beyonce has been wearing her mom's designs from the get go and now her mom is designing her fashion line House of Dereon, which she wears on every possible occasion. Victoria Beckham is a fashion icon; she started with her amazing jeans for Rock&Republic, and is expanding her dVb line.

Jessica Simpson's brand has some gorgeous shoes, which are very similar to the Christian Louboutin ones she wears herself, except for less. Which brings up another question, can Celebrity Brands really be considered legitimate fashion ventures if the celebrity's rarely even wear them themselve? For example, Kimora Lee Simmon's tacky line- Baby Phat, it is cheaply made and overpriced. You rarely see her in off the rack Baby Phat. Instead of having the world's largest collection of Baby Phat purses, she has the largest collection of Louis Vuitton purses!

Well, the theme was most definetly gold and sequins! That's why he is Beyonce's favourite designer. It was a bit too flashy for me. However, I really loved the chiffon dress, which wasn't gold but a warm yellow. I love the empire waist style with the layering of the chiffon for the skirt.
